Historic pub in London

The "George" in London is a historic pub that belongs to the well-known British chain Greene King and is considered one of the most remarkable examples of traditional British pub culture. Located in the bustling neighborhood of Southwark, near the famous Borough Market and London Bridge, it is the only remaining galleried inn in London – an architectural relic from 1676. The pub, once a coffeehouse mentioned by Charles Dickens in his novel "Little Dorrit," attracts both tourists and locals who want to combine a piece of history with modern comfort. It is under the care of the National Trust and maintains its unique character despite the changing surroundings.

Experience traditional British cuisine

The atmosphere at the George is a successful blend of historical charm and cozy warmth. The galleried structure with its wooden beams and the spacious beer garden in front of the building invite guests to feel the past of London while watching the city's hustle and bustle. The interior décor is traditional, with dark wooden furniture and an open fireplace that provides comfort on cooler days. It is a family and dog-friendly place equipped with free Wi-Fi, making it attractive for modern needs as well. Especially on warm days, the outdoor area offers a relaxed way to enjoy the surroundings, while inside there is often a lively, but not overwhelming, pub atmosphere.

Best fish and chips in London

Culinary-wise, the George offers classic British pub dishes that impress with freshness and quality. A highlight is the "Traditional Fish and Chips," where crispy battered fish is served with thick, golden fries – a dish that captures the essence of British comfort food. Equally popular is the "Steak and Ale Pie," a hearty pie with tender beef cooked in a rich beer sauce, enveloped in a crispy puff pastry crust. For a lighter option, there is the "Ploughman’s Lunch," a traditional platter of cheese, pickles, and fresh bread, perfect for a relaxed afternoon. The dishes are designed to be satisfying and flavor-balanced, reflecting the down-to-earth cuisine for which Greene King is known.

Cozy atmosphere in Southwark pub

The drink menu is another highlight, with a wide selection of British ales that pair perfectly with the food. The range of Real Ales brewed by Greene King, with their malty and slightly bitter taste, is highly appreciated, emphasizing the pub tradition. For those who prefer something lighter, there is also a selection of wines and non-alcoholic beverages to round off the experience. The George is also known for its seasonal events, such as St. Patrick's Day or Mother's Day, where special food and drinks are offered for guests to enjoy in a festive mood.

Pub-friendly environment in London

The service at the George is often described as friendly and attentive, with staff striving to maintain traditional pub hospitality. Thanks to the option to order through the Greene King app, the process is efficient even on busy days, although the historic setting may require some patience at times. The pub also offers private dining options in cozy private rooms, suitable for celebrations or special occasions, with table service provided – a luxury that enhances the visit.

The George's Inn is a great tabern/reataurant where to smell History and feel that Charles Dicken can suddenly come and ask for a beer. Nearby the Borough Market, for me is a Must if visit London. I did it on Sunday and ordered its Sunday Roast. Try by yourself!

The food is very nice and service is lovely! A quiet place to dine at the city centre. The duck was very tasty, the pear frangipani, too.

It was really good ubtil we got to closing. One of the staff walked in saying "you guys should have left 20 minutes ago, we're closed" bearing in mind we were in one of the private booked rooms and that was the first person to tell us to disappear. Arguably, perfectly ok to do. Issue was, one of our group said "oh sorry, you're the first one to tell us". No response from there, went about clearing up glasses but then said "we won't tolerate abuse". As far as I'm aware, no one even swore. We left, and were told by a bouncer to head to the pub on the other side, as they were open an hour longer. Issue was, the woman who said "we don't tolerate abuse" told the bouncer of the pub on the other side to not let us because we were being abusive BUT as far as I know, we really weren't. I know the job is hard enough but I don't believe a single swear word or anything like that was exchanged, just maybe a bit of snark by the one person. We're all good, and we still like The George, but one of your staff members really has an issue, it wasn't even a bouncer. The people who were there, I'd really be surprised if someone caused a genuine issue.

visited The George last night with my family, who were in town, and it was absolutely perfect. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the food was excellent, and the service was truly outstanding. A special shoutout to Dean for his world-class hospitality—he went above and beyond to make our evening special. From sharing a bit of the pub’s history to surprising us with a bonus custard for our pudding, his attention to detail and genuine kindness made all the difference. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Will definitely be coming back!

Great atmosphere and very busy. We were there midweek. Easy to see why it’s so popular. The history speaks for itself. None of the toilets, anywhere had any soap. Luckily we were not eating. Staff were told but nothing done.

Pretty nice atmosphere! Waited about 30 minutes to he served at one of the bars. Staff were rushed off their feet to keep up with demand, and this was on a winter’s night. Must be carnage in the summer! Would go back though!

Personnel pas aimable à l’accueil. Il faut penser à changer de job! Le principe d’un accueil est d’être accueillant… Le boeuf du burger n’était vraiment pas bonne. Le buger poulet était meilleur. Le fish and chips était très bon.
